In a major recession students are in need of money to buy things such as books and other supplies that are necessary. Some students depend on financial aid to do so.

The last disbursement was Feb. 24. With this last disbursement that came out many students were confused. “Where is the money?” was a common question asked by students.

“We have over 500 accounts,” said Roxanne Fernandez, teller supervisor at Chaffey Federal Union. Fernandez said, “10-15 students have problems a semester.” She said. “We don’t have any issues to what amount is given.”

“It’s important that students need to accept the awards on My Chaffey View and to check it constantly,” said Patricia Bopko, Financial Aid Coordinator.

With an estimated amount on the My Chaffey View website, students get an idea of what they will receive, but cutbacks in class offerings have made it a challenge for some students to maintain full-time status to fulfill financial aid requirements.

“It’s challenging [and] all colleges are facing this challenge. Some don’t even have summer programs. We’re doing the best we can,” Bopko said.

“Since the cutback on classes, it is hard to get 12 units to get full coverage for my major,” said Tykwone Cater, who is seeking a degree in sports medicine. “I have applied and checked my status, and I have yet to see my financial aid.”

Cater said that he followed the same steps last year and received his financial aid on time.

“This year, I don’t know what’s going on with the system, he said.

Officials only say that students such as Cater looking for money to pay for classes should check their status on the My Chaffey View website or make an appointment with the financial aid department.
