The Annual Spring Volunteer Fair was held on March 3 in the main quad. Organizations such as the American Heart Association, LeRoy Haynes Center, LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Mercy House Transitional Living Center, Soldier Network and many others were at the fair.

About 75 people attended the event. There was food from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, and drinks were sponsored by the ASCC.

“I came in for free food,” said Cristian Zuniga, graphic design major. “I am the president of the Spanish Club, and I wanted to get more ideas on how to volunteer.

“I saw a bunch of people walking and talking,” Zuniga said. “I think it wasn’t as good as last year because it was windy.”

American Heart Association volunteer Linda Tra said, “We are here to prevent, treat and defeat heart diseases.”

One of the newest organizations is the SCD Soldier Network. The main goal of this organization, explained student Andrell Wilson, is to become a support group of adult sickle cell disease.

“We received an invite from the ASCC, and I jump at those opportunities when given to us,” said volunteer coordinator for the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House, Gwen Terry.

The organization’s purpose is to provide housing for sick children.

“A lot of our volunteers are college students, which works well for us,” said Cindy Frias, recruitment coordinator for LULAC National Educational Service Centers.

LULAC sends out college mentors for students at Emerson Middle School in Pomona. “It is a great way to get experience. It shows that they care about the community,” said Bertha Hermosillo.

“I found my friends going to the volunteer fair,” said student Lance Collins. “It seems to be ending pretty early.”

Collins is not planning on volunteering for any of the organizations, or as he said, “Not because I don’t want to, but I don’t have time. I have classes every day of the week.”
