While driving in the rain on Haven Avenue near Amber Lane, Chaffey student Jorge Tovar ran into a sidewalk fence on Feb. 22 around 11:15 a.m.

While Tovar was exiting the college parking lot, entering the Haven intersection, Tovar’s back tires spun out. As the vehicle was spinning, Tovar began to lose control of his truck; then he hit the fence.

“I was coming out of Chaffey to make a left turn onto Haven. Due to the rain, I lost control, hit the center divider, and my back wheels lost control and I hit the brake,” said Tovar.

“Speed was a major factor,” Deputy Michael Gasway said. He arrived on the scene at 11:27 a.m. “This happens once a month in the rainy season,” he said.

Shain Grow, business administration major, saw the entire accident.

“I looked up; I saw him start to spin. He whipped around,” said Grow. “He hit the divider, lost control. His tires gave out. He panicked and hit the gas. While hitting the gas, he ran into the fence. I think he just gunned it.”

Van Thibodeaux, lead maintenance worker for the city of Rancho Cucamonga, said this is a common accident site.

“In the last 12 months, this is the third accident. In the last 10 years, this is the 15th accident,” Thibodeaux said concerning the Haven/Amber intersection.
