Petitions for student offices available

The deadline to submit an application to run for student government office is Friday, March 25.

To be eligible to run for student office, a student must be currently enrolled in six units for the spring 2010 semester and had already completed six units in the fall of 2009 at Chaffey.

Current Associated Students of Chaffey College President/Student Trustee James Applewhite II wants students to become involved in the process.

“I encourage students to step up and challenge themselves,” Applewhite said.

Candidates must fill out a petition, which can be obtained at Student Activities. The petition must include: a type-written statement from the candidate which will be printed (unedited) in the Breeze; a release to allow Student Activities to check eligibility; an agreement to abide by election rules and procedures; and the signatures of 25 currently enrolled students.

“I expect a big turnout of students this year,” said Applewhite.

Student John Murad said he hopes the next President/Student Trustee can fill the shoes of Applewhite since he plans on transferring after this semester.

“I haven’t been at Chaffey that long,” Murad said, “but I always hear what a great guy he is and how he really takes his responsibilities seriously. I just hope the next person can be just as committed as he is.”

The nominations for Faculty/Staff of the Year will also begin March 8, and end on March 11. Top nominees will also appear on election ballots.

A mandatory meeting for student candidates is scheduled on March 29 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. in Student Activities. A workshop for campaigning guidelines will be presented at the same time.

On Tuesday March 30, a candidate forum will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 in the Free Speech Area. This event will be hosted by the Election Committee. On April 1, the polls will be open on the Chino campus and April 5 on the Fontana campus.

From April 6-8, the polls will be open at the Rancho campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Student Activities lounge.
