Instructors are preparing final exams for the fall semester, and the stress for students is mounting exponentially. How can students keep their stress and anxiety under control?
The Student Health Services is offering daily outreach information to give some quick tips to reduce students’ stress.
Students can get more information from a flyer provided by the Student Health Services in the Campus Center West building adjacent to the cafeteria. This flyer provides good suggestions for those students who feel confused and stressed out during the final exam period.
Kay Peek, who works in the Health Outreach Information Office, offers some tips for students to reduce stress.
“Eat a healthy well balanced diet,” she said. “Food can support our body. If a body is unhealthy and suffers from diseases, the stress level will increase. Therefore, it is important to eat healthy food on a daily basis.”
Along with proper nutrition Peek suggests getting at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
“A good sleep can relax the body and mind and make one feel more energetic the next day,” she said.
Doing deep muscle relaxation by trying to relax body muscles from head to toe for at least 15 minutes is another useful suggestion.
“Start from the head and move to the shoulders. Then go down to the arms and legs,” Peek said.
She points out that one should breath a deeply whenever feeling stressed, practicing this type of breathing several times.
In addition Peek said one can increase self-esteem by positive reinforcement, which is another technique to minimize the stress.
“You can tell yourself, ‘I can do it, I can do it.’ Because when you talk to yourself positively, your mind and body are more relaxed,” she said.
All of these tips are constructive ways to keep your body healthy and relaxed. Students who want to achieve great results on their finals should remember the importance of keeping stress levels under control.
