Why Valentine's Day is such a drag

It sounds like potentially the best day of the year but for me Valentines Day always seems to end with a bleeding heart instead of roses. It is unclear why I perpetually spend this Hallmark Holiday with a movie, rather than with that special someone, but it always happens. No sob story here, it is just that one likes to have a little piece of the magic now and again. With this being said, I vote to eliminate Cupid Day from the American calendar for the reasons that follow.

1. The Beatles said it the best, “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Love is something you should share, give, eat or whatever, every single day, not on the day that it is literally impossible to forget about it. Giving presents to your sweetie on Valentines Day is obligatory and therefore it holds little solid sentiment to lavish material affection on this day.

2. The origin of Valentines Day is shady; most people agree that there could have been at least three Saint Valentines. All of these potential founders were martyred. Death is not romantic. No it is not, ever.

3. Money is tight for most people right now, especially for college students. Who has even an extra $50 to spend on flowers that die in a matter of days?

4. The world goes mad on February 14. Nearly everyone is out, not necessarily doing anything special, they are just out, being. Couples are out taking up space and crowding the freeways.

5. It gives me anxiety when I think of the impending tragedy of a day that is supposed to be perfect. How terrible would it be to be watching a sunset or becoming engaged and then EXPLOSION? Well okay, maybe not explosion, but the possibility of heartbreak seems so much more imminent on special days.

6. If it must exist and gifts must be exchanged I opt for a homemade treasure that is dripping with craft glue and time well spent together, not a sodium rich dinner prepared without sentiment.
