The $23 million Visual and Performing Arts Complex/Music Building has opened. The building is located north of the theater and west of College Drive.

The three-story, 46,000-square-foot building includes an art complex, digital media labs, photo studio, dance studio, post-production lab, art studio, audio lab, interior design lab, lecture rooms, and faculty offices.

Also, a student lounge is located on the second floor. Students are welcome to study and hang out although the noise level needs to be low due to the offices in the building.

“The offices are twice as big as my last office,” Administration of Justice Instructor Baron Brown said. He likes the high-tech nature of the facility, even the shades in his office. “Overall, I give it an eight on my ratings.”

The building is so large that first-time visitors may need to go to the map in the elevator.

Nythaniel Fields, computer technology major, likes the new modern look.
“I personally like riding in the elevator,” he said. “But they could have made the stairs in the building wider.”

“I wouldn’t mind if all of the other buildings were like it,” said Sachia Grey, Animation major.

Not all students were impressed with building. “I didn’t know we had an art building" said Health science major, Ethan Fichtner, "I personally wished they built a parking lot. But if it’s that tall new building on Wilson I been in that building. I liked it. The building had a modern vibe. The lights in the building were cool, like I said before a parking lot would have been better”.

Overall the art Professors were in need a new building. What some students don’t understand is the professors, “Have a lot of stuff to carry,” Brown said.

The building stands out, is up and it is here to stay.

Update:

On Feb. 22 the arts building had a glitch. Early on Monday morning, Professor Christa Havenhill found herself locked out of her office.

Havenhill was reporting to her office for early office preparation for her 8 a.m. class until she discovered the power not working. She was let in by another staff member.

“Part of me was a little frustrated because the electricity was off, and another part of me, being a theater major, I learned to go with the flow,” said Havenhill.

The building has only been active for two months so glitches are meant to be expected. When the building does have problems, Bernard’s, the company that designed the building, comes out and fixes it.

With a new buildings comes new problems.
