Moving on is never easy, but when you’re an iconic figure such as Bob Olivera transitioning is second nature. Family, friends, and fans all attended Olivera’s retirement reception on Dec 1, at the Cask ‘n Cleaver Restaurant in Rancho Cucamonga.
Olivera’s last day of over three decaydes of service as Chaffey Colleges Athletic Director. Olivera’s dedication to the community provided the entire Inland Empire with an opportunity to witness and to participate in the growth of a community. Under the leadership of Olivera Chaffey college served as the propitiation between student athletes and their goal to obtain academic success.
His legacy was celebrated by more than fifty of his closes friends and colleagues. Coaches and staff representing all of Chaffey ‘sport venues mingled with friends over a Mexican style buffet, while basking in a symmetrical ambiance created by muted flat screen televisions featuring NCAA sports. Participants reminisced of the joyful times and the private experiences they shared with Olivera and the program.
Justin Caudill, Chaffey’s equipment manager, said, “He built a great foundation for the Inland athlete… Bob Knows exactly what he wants, and once he sets his mind to something, it’s a done deal.”
Although the evening was designed to celebrate a legend and to put the final exclamation mark on the Olivera era, the atmosphere was anything but sad.
“Mr. Olivera wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Coach Jeff Klein.
Midway through the gala affair Chaffey’s theme song echoed through the air as the party participants began to sing along, ending with a loud chant “Go Panthers.”
Friends since 7th grade of Alta Loma High School Jamie Booker and Ted Peduin made a special appearance.
“We wouldn’t have missed this for nothing in the world,” said Peduin. “We grew up together. Bob was always a leader, and he taught us early in life that it’s all about community.”
It was only fitting for Olivera’s official going away to be filled with family and friends because he spent his life serving them.
