The second annual denim fashion show featured a variety of designs from students in the Chaffey Fashion Design & Merchandising Department.

Chaffey held its second annual fashion show on Feb. 24. The theme, like last year’s, was “Deconstructing Denim.” It was a celebration of Black History Month, presented by the Black Faculty & Staff Association.

The campus also played host to a group of high school students from neighboring Los Osos High. Among the visiting students was a step club. After the fashion show they broke out into a performance.

Even in the rain, the turnout was impressive.  All the outfits in the show were made by the fashion merchandising/design students, and more than a few showed promise. While some of the models needed a few lessons in how to walk in high heels, most showed well.
Garments such as a cute denim romper and dresses with neon ruffled cap sleeves by student designer Rosalba Ruiz stood out. “I’m going for a ‘60s vintage rock and roll electro remixed look,” she said. “Green is the new black, and I’m doing a new revolution of green wear.”

MC Anita Fletcher enthusiastically narrated the show. “I had a wonderful time,” she said after the show “Instructor Karen Encinas and her students are awesome. The designs were unique and creative. They’re on the edge of fashion. JJ Alvarez took it to a new level with his design.”

Many of the designs were keeping with what is current in fashion today, and the show was a good reminder that old materials can be made new again. Whether the item in question is thrifted, revamped, or in this case, completely reconstructed and made into another thing altogether, this event proves that spending a lot of money is not always necessary to be fashionable.
