The newly opened Chino campus was red hot when a construction fire broke out at the Community Building at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 31. The Oaks entrance was temporarily closed to students but has since reopened.

Nervously watching the fire, student Hillary Dicksion hoped the fire department would arrive quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby Main Building.

Dicksion said the construction workers attempted to put out the fire with garden hoses, but the fire department had to be called. The Community Building is still under construction. The Main Building was not damaged.

Chaffey spokesperson Peggy Cartwright said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but speculates the cause to be construction related.

Once the fire was extinguished, lightweight foam was sprayed over the surfaces. Fire Safety Officer J. Ault explained that this is a preventative measure to protect against further damage to the structure.

The metal framing of the building helped to prevent rapid fire. Thick layers of burning insulation were quickly extinguished and thrown from upper level floors.
